Maryland Marital Therapy Degrees and Education

Maryland like many of the other states has their own requirements as to what it takes to become a martial therapist. One of the primary requirements is that the applicant has at least a master’s degree, or a doctoral degree. Either of these options is fine but should be within a related field. You will need to find the school you want to start with.

There are many ways you can go about getting your bachelor’s degree from state and private universities to community colleges and online educational resources. You will have many options. There are some things that you will want to take into consideration when you are making your choice.  First you will want to make sure whatever school you are working with is accredited. This is very important because if you don’t you might end up having to re-do the work you’ve already done. This is important regardless of where you are getting your education, but especially with online schools as they are more easily falsified.

When you have chosen your school it’s important to remember that they have resources for you to use to make sure you are getting the most out of your education. Advisors can help prevent you from making errors when planning out your education, with so many requirements that you will have to meet. You don’t want to end up taking classes that you do not need, or missing classes that are a requirement, or important to your career path. So be sure to use all the available options you have.

Your next step after completing your bachelor’s degree will be to move on to graduate school. This is where you will complete your master’s degree, which will allow you to being the process of getting your license to practice as a marital therapist. The state has separate requirements, though some of them may be combined with your master’s degree if you are paying attention, though this is not always the case.  The state will require you practice with clients for a specific number of hours. These hours will also have to be supervised. This will help to ensure that you aren’t doing any damage to clients, and that you are getting all the proper training.

When you have completed the states requirements you will be able to take the mandatory exam and complete the application for a license. This will include things like offering the board your educational records, letters of recommendation, and any other relevant information. The board will review your application and if they feel that you have met all of the needed requirements you will be granted a license, and can begin practicing as a marital therapist.  You will be ready to begin helping couples work through their difficulties and begin to communicate more effectively with one another. You’ll have vast choices when it comes to how you can use your education, from working with the government, or court system to working in a private practice or doctor’s office.
