What is the training like to become a Marital therapist in Colorado

If you are interested in returning to school or if you’ve recently graduated marital therapy can be a good field to work in. It is a career choice that will give you the ability to help people in relationships learn to work with each other. It can be a gratifying type of work. The process of training to become a marital therapist can be a long and hard road, but in the end you will find yourself in a position to apply to jobs that previously would have been closed.

The first step in your training will be to ensure you are getting your bachelor’s degree. There are many ways that you can do this. Some people choose to start at the community college, or private college level, others choose an online school or a state university. Regardless of where you start it’s important to make sure that you are getting your degree from a source that is accredited. This is especially important with online schools. If you aren’t careful you can easily end up spending time and money that you don’t need to, without gaining anything. If the school you attend doesn’t have the proper accreditation you will end up having to repeat the classes you have already taken. Be sure that you take advantage of the services whatever school you choose offers. Many times you can find that they will have an educational planner available. Because each graduate school has different requirements you’ll want to talk this over with your advisor, they can help you to find the right classes and avoid missing any of the requirements that you might have, saving you time and expenses.

The next step that you will want to take; after you have your bachelor’s degree is to work on your master’s degree and in Colorado a master’s degree is the minimum level of education that you can have to become a marital therapist. This step can take a varied amount of time.  The next thing that you will want to consider is the fact that the state has their requirements. In Colorado aside from having either your master’s degree, or your doctorate, you must also have had at least fifteen hundred hours of client contact. This means that you will be working clinically with the clients, on a face-to-face level.

This requirement must be fulfilled under supervision. The supervisor you choose to work with must be board certified and also have a specific level of service. One of the best things that you can do to help yourself is to research thoroughly the state board requirements for getting your license. Often the face-to-face counseling must be completed within a specific level of time, generally around two years. It’s important that you will have the time to complete the process; otherwise you might find yourself having to start over.

Often you will have to take an exam during your application process. You may also be required to present your school transcripts so be sure as you go through the years of training that you are keeping detailed records of your progress. There may also be different requirements that you will have to meet which can include fees for the application and licensing costs.

Once the board has approved your application you will receive your license. There are many choices that you can have when you are looking for work as a marital therapist. One of the primary choices many make is to work within a private office. This allows them to work within a group of therapists.
