Child Therapy Certification in Connecticut

Connecticut is a state filled with overly qualified, top notch child therapists. This means that in order to get the best jobs in the field and to keep them you have to be able to stand out about the rest. As mentioned, you'll find some pretty stiff competition throughout the state. Most will hold master's degrees, with a large chunk even holding doctoral degrees. If you don't have a level of education higher than a bachelor's degree, then that's definitely your first step. In fact, without this you'll be hard pressed to find jobs in the field, let alone take the top ranking positions.

Once you've gotten your education underway, if you're still not happy with your work or your pay, then it may be time to seek certification. Certification is like a stamp of approval that says you know exactly what you're doing when it comes to your job and that you're one of the very best in the field. With a certification, you can land just about any job you want! You'll have a great credential to add to your resume, and you'll also be able to receive all of the many benefits offered by the certifying organization.

One of the most prestigious organizations that you can seek certification from, and one that is quite popular and well known throughout Connecticut, is the American Board of Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology. Individuals who wish to earn the basic board certification from this organization will need to possess a doctoral level degree from a professional psychology program. The program must have been accredited by the American Psychological Association or another approved organization at the time that the degree was granted. There is no need to present a proof of degree if the person seeking certification is listed in the current National Register of Health Service Providers in Psychology or holds a Certificate of Professional Qualification in Psychology. Additionally, the certification candidate must possess a licensure from the state of Connecticut.

The doctoral educational program must have been specifically focused on work dealing with children and/or adolescents and must have included experiential learning as well. Additionally, those seeking certification must be able to showcase that they have completed a satisfactory internship in the field, in which the majority of time was spent working directly with children and/or adolescents. The final area of qualification for certification is actual experience working in the field, not as an intern, but as a paid professional.

Acceptable experience may be either two years working directly with children and/or young adults, in which at least one year of the experience is supervised for at least one hour each week by a qualified professional; or one year in a formal post doctorate degree residency, again working directly with children and/or young adults.

Once all of these qualifications are met, individuals are then asked to take an examination covering basic areas of study and practice in the field. A passing score on this test will earn them certification, which will lead to more and better opportunities in the field.
